Douwe Halbertsma (Delft, 1980) is an artist living and working in Rotterdam. He works with sculpture and art projects in public space.

Douwe’s sculptures are formed simply and with clarity. Although they may appear to depict everyday motifs, behind their simple appearance complex decisions have been made. In his works he plays with the fundamental principles of sculpture such as space, shape and mass. This play does not stay as an abstract conception but always has a consequence in the meaning of his sculptures.

As a sculptor, Douwe takes a fresh look at tradition, but also enjoys making references to comics and cartoons. His fascination with the possibilities and limits of sculpture as a medium goes hand in hand with a form of humor, which widens perspectives of and lends lightness to his works.

Since graduating from Arnhem Institute For The Arts in 2003 Douwe has exhibited throughout the Netherlands, in such places as STROOM (Den Haag), Reinier van Ewijk Projects (Amsterdam) and Ram Foundation (Rotterdam).

He has done both private and public commissioned art projects.

Douwe Halbertsma (Delft,1980) is een kunstenaar die woont en werkt in Rotterdam. Hij maakt sculpturen en werkt in de openbare ruimte.

De beelden van Douwe zijn helder vormgegeven, opgebouwd uit simpele vormen die verwijzen naar de menselijke figuur. Als beeldhouwer kijkt Douwe met een frisse blik naar de traditie, maar refereert net zo makkelijk aan strip- en andere beeldcultuur.

Zijn fascinatie voor de formele mogelijkheden en beperkingen van het medium gaat altijd gepaard met een relativerende humor die zijn beelden lucht geeft. Zo blijft het spel met de fundamentele begrippen van de beeldhouwkunst, zoals de spanning tussen de aan- en afwezigheid van ruimte, aan- en afwezigheid van massa geen abstract begrip. Maar krijgt het altijd een gevolg in de betekenis van zijn beelden.

Sinds zijn afstuderen in 2003 aan de afdeling Vrije Kunst van de Hogeschool van de Kunsten Arnhem exposeert Douwe landelijk op plekken zoals; Ram Foundation (Rotterdam), Reinier van Ewijk Projects (Amsterdam) en STROOM (Den Haag). Ook heeft hij diverse opdrachten gerealiseerd, zowel in de publieke ruimte als voor particuliere opdrachtgevers.
